This trade can be seen as a "remedial measure" for the 76ers after signing Caleb Martin to a four-year, $40 million deal last July. At that time, considering their limited salary cap space following Paul George's acquisition, it seemed like a smart move. I rated this signing an 'A' due to its creativity (including a $5 million unlikely-to-trigger incentive clause). However, seven months later, my confidence in this contract has waned.
Caleeb Martin is clearly not the reason behind the Sixers’ sub-.500 record this season; however, he also failed to become part of the solution. Despite shooting 38% from three-point range—above his career average of 36%—his overall scoring efficiency was below par with just a 47% field goal percentage on two-pointers—the lowest since his rookie year (36%). On defense too, Martin did not significantly impact team performance despite taking on tough defensive assignments and having one of the highest opponent usage rates at over 23%. The team's recent four-game winning streak occurred while he was sidelined with a hip injury and undrafted rookie Justin Edwards excelled in his absence.
The contrast lies in Quentin Grimes’s superior performance this season—with impressive stats including hitting up to 40% from beyond arc and maintaining a two-pointer success rate at54%. His arrival could lessen Philadelphia’s dependency on veterans Eric Gordon (36) and Kyle Lowry (who turns39 next month), both main options for coach Nick Nurse at shooting guard since their rookie seasons.
